CIHDE shows its achievements in the media

In order to show to the community the achievements and tasks that Man in the Desert Research Center (CIHDE) fulfills, Mr. Sergio Medina Parra, Liaison and Management Director of the institution, gathers with different media from Arica and Parinacota region, starting with Radio Cappíssima (on the picture, with Mr. José Toribio Vergara, journalist, news at 13:00 hrs).

These actions correspond to the Communications Strategy of CIHDE, thereby bringing out of the walls of the classrooms and laboratories the scientific studies that are being conducted within the research lines of Archaeology and Anthropology and Genetics and Bioanthropology, with leading researchers and doctors of science Lorena Cornejo Ponce, Calogero Santoro Vargas and Francisco Rothhammer Engel.

For Sergio Medina this is a mission that CIHDE must conduct in a decisive manner, since the great achievements and research that Center has made since its creation should be known by the community, to appreciate the virtues in field of natural resources and patrimony that the region has, such as solar energy and our valuable patrimonial resources such as Chinchorro Culture.

“Now it is essential to achieve the relationship with the environment, the community in which we are immersed, to know and calibrate properly what we are going to communicate, in order to increase awareness and appreciation of the excellent qualities that we have in Arica and Parinacota, which have been a matter of study by our leading researchers in the Center”, Medina said.

Moreover, CIHDE is fulfilling various courses of action, which in a first stage will be visiting radio stations, and later perform some activities after generating a public agenda focused on the scientific topics, and matters of innovation and transfer.

CIHDE supports project that bring science to students around the country

National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research CONICYT is offering an important opportunity to promote and support science to the students of third year of secondary municipal schools around the country, through the program “Chile Goes”, and for its implementation in Arica and Parinacota already counts with the support of CIHDE (Man in the Desert Research Center).

To develop and discuss the realization of the program, Management and Liaison Director of CIHDE, Mr. Sergio Medina Parra, met Wanda García and Sandra Garfe, the professionals who were in the region seeking for the political support necessary to implement the program at the North gate of Chile.

On the topic, Mr. Medina Parra said that Arica and Parinacota region is considered to develop this exciting project, which, in his opinion, should address sharply the characteristic features from this area, such as the great heritage that signify the Chinchorro mummies.

“In my opinion the 10 thousand-year-history of Chinchorro culture and the life in the desert with the adaptation of human communities to its extreme living conditions, which University of Tarapaca and this Center have researched and promoted since its genesis, should be highlighted decisively.  CIHDE gives all the support for this initiative which is really very encouraging”, Medina said.

In the dialogue between Medina and the representatives of “Chile Goes”, it was discussed  which professionals  from CIHDE can provide valuable expertise to the students that participate in the program, where Liaison Director specially highlighted the prestigious scientists such as: Francisco Rothhammer (PhD in Genetics), Calogero Santoro (PhD in Archaeology) and Lorena Cornejo (PhD in Chemistry).

PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS
The initiative “Chile Goes, Youth Encounter with Science and Technology” was created by the National Innovation Council for Competitiveness - CNIC- and the Ministry of Education, and was conducted by CONICYT throughout its Explora program.

It was developed in January 2011, with a total of 8 encounters, gathering 1.238 students of third year of secondary education from different establishments in the country (36 from Arica), being scheduled for this 2012 in regions of Tarapacá and Los Ríos; but with the clear intention to be developed in the XV Region.

The working method consists of a camp lasting 6 days, with all the expenses paid, where the minors could approach the science in a didactic, experiential way with monitoring, but above all with leading scientists from different areas who will talk about their vision and first approximations to their fields of study, among which are Humberto Maturana, Andrés Weintruab, or Jorge Allende.
